New to EMS and nervous about rhabdo — how do I start safely?

Good instinct to ask — a little caution is exactly right, and the risk is very manageable when you respect a few basics. (General info, not medical advice; the pinned notice has the full list, and check with your doctor about your own situation.)

The simple playbook to start safely:

Start low on intensity — firm but easy, nowhere near max.
Ramp slowly over 8–10 weeks; don’t chase big numbers early.
Hydrate well before, during, and after.
Space it out — 1–2 sessions a week, never back-to-back hard days at first.
Skip a session if you’re ill, very sore, or badly under-slept.

Then watch for the warning signs (severe pain or weakness, swelling, dark urine) and act on them if they ever show up. Do that and you’re doing the exact things the research says keep EMS safe.
