No — but it’s often oversold, and both things can be true at once. The core mechanism is real: controlled trials and a meta-analysis show genuine gains in muscle mass and strength, and there’s reasonable evidence for chronic back pain and benefits in older adults.

Where it gets gimmicky is the marketing — claims about “melting fat,” spot-reducing your belly, or activating “90% of your muscle fibers” go beyond what the evidence supports. EMS won’t reliably burn fat on its own, and it complements rather than replaces conventional training.

Judge it by what it actually does well (time-efficient strength) and you’ll be happy; judge it by the hype and you’ll be disappointed.
