Good instinct to ask — a little caution is exactly right, and the risk is very manageable when you respect a few basics. (General info, not medical advice; the pinned notice has the full list, and check with your doctor about your own situation.)

The simple playbook to start safely:

• Start low on intensity — firm but easy, nowhere near max.
• Ramp slowly over 8–10 weeks; don’t chase big numbers early.
• Hydrate well before, during, and after.
• Space it out — 1–2 sessions a week, never back-to-back hard days at first.
• Skip a session if you’re ill, very sore, or badly under-slept.

Then watch for the warning signs (severe pain or weakness, swelling, dark urine) and act on them if they ever show up. Do that and you’re doing the exact things the research says keep EMS safe.

Welcome to the Safety board. Please read this before you ask or answer here.

This forum is for sharing experiences and general information — it is NOT medical advice. EMS is powerful, and a few rules keep everyone safe. Always talk to a qualified professional about your own situation.

Who should NOT use EMS without a doctor's go-ahead:

• Anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device (this one is an absolute no)

• Pregnant women

• People with epilepsy or a seizure disorder

• Serious heart, circulatory, or kidney conditions

• Acute illness, fever, recent surgery, or open wounds

• Uncontrolled high blood pressure, or diabetes without medical clearance

The one risk to take seriously: rhabdomyolysis. Overdoing EMS — especially in your first sessions or while dehydrated — can break down muscle tissue quickly and harm your kidneys. Avoid it by starting at low intensity, ramping up slowly over several weeks, staying well hydrated, and not stacking hard sessions back to back.

Warning signs to act on: severe muscle pain or weakness, heavy swelling, or dark, cola-colored urine in the days after a session. If you notice these, seek medical care right away.

When in doubt, go easier and check with your doctor. Train smart and enjoy it.
